Hi,
I’m Maria.
I’m Maria Gold, an Austrian educator and German teacher in Vienna, and the founder of Speak/Vienna.
I teach private 1:1 German lessons for international adults who want to do more than learn German – they want to use it confidently in their life in Austria.
From teaching German to living abroad myself.
I’ve spent seven years working in education and have taught German as a Foreign and Second Language (DaF/DaZ).
My academic background includes a Bachelor of Education, a Master’s degree in Educational Science, as well as additional training in German as a Foreign and Second Language.
But some of the most important things I know about learning a language didn’t come from university.
They came from living abroad myself.
I spent three years living in the United States, building a life in another language and experiencing what it’s like when everyday things suddenly aren’t quite so everyday anymore.
Starting a conversation. Making a phone call. Understanding paperwork. Finding the right words at work. Or trying to follow a group conversation when everyone is speaking just a little too fast.
You can understand a lot of a language and still hesitate when it’s your turn to speak.
I know that feeling.

German that has something to do with your life.
- I don't believe learning German should exist separately from the life you're actually living.
- If you have an important meeting coming up, we can prepare for it.
- If you need to go to the Magistrat, we'll work through what you might hear and what you want to say.
- If there's a letter from your Hausverwaltung sitting on your kitchen table, bring it.
- And if you simply want to order a Melange or Krügel, chat with your neighbour or finally understand a little more of what the Viennese around you are saying – that's part of learning German, too.
- As a German teacher in Vienna, I want lessons to connect directly to the situations you encounter in everyday life.
How will this help you communicate outside our lesson?
